Chapter Twenty: Logos

I found a new normal, powering through school each day with the least possible amount of human interaction and spending all my free time at the ramps with Summer and Dylan. We announced our partnership with Skateopia and released some more videos.

Today had been like all the other days—survive school, then head straight to the ramps. We were taking a water break when Summer pulled her helmet off and readjusted her mask. Our contracts stated that whenever we skated in public, we had to wear our masks to keep our identities hidden. I didn’t even notice mine anymore, but Summer was always fiddling with hers and pressing the fabric down around her eyes just before she started skating.

“Maybe you need one with bigger eyeholes,” I said.

Summer tore her gaze off of Dylan, who was working on a rail trick. “Huh?”

I pointed to her mask.

“Oh. No, the eyeholes are fine. It’s just annoying—I really wish we hadn’t agreed to the face masks.”

“Really? I thought that was the best part of our deal. We get a clean slate to build ourselves up however we want.”

“I just kinda wish people at school knew it was me under here.”

“Trust me, you don’t want that much attention, even if it starts out good. These masks will keep us safe.”

Summer fiddled with her mask a bit more, tying it at the nape of her neck right under her massive bun, then untying it and trying above the bun, just under the lower edge of her helmet.

“Here, let me help.”

I crossed the ties above her bun and then wound them around it and tied it all up underneath. “There. Now it’s acting as an extra hair tie, too. Your mask won’t fall off unless your hair does.”

“I still wish we didn’t have to wear them.”

Dylan finished showing off and skated over to us. “Look who I found!”

Behind him, walking quickly to try and keep up, was Mollie. She wore heavy black combat boots, jeans, and a polyester jacket I could only describe as Hillary Clinton gone to the dark side. “Hey, Flippin’ Skaters! How’s my favorite new trio?”

“Mollie’s got some merch options to show us,” Dylan said.

“Ooh, merch?” Summer said. “That sounds so official.”

“Well, you’re definitely official. We’re working on putting together a schedule of events for you—I’ll let you know as soon as I have the final version. We loved your announcement video, and we did one as well, which you’re free to use for promotional purposes however you wish. Also, we have a stylist working on your signature looks—we’ll set up a photo shoot once we have everything settled. But for now, which products do you like best?”

She pulled a tablet out of a studded canvas shoulder bag. We gathered closer so we could all see. She scrolled through a few pages, showing different items we could have made with our logo on it—t-shirts, water bottles, headbands, tote bags. There were even things like makeup mirrors and phone chargers.

We pointed out ones we liked and she marked them.
